Espresso: To escape or enjoy?

We’ve all heard the age old adage, “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away.”

A saying used on all of us as children to make sure to eat our fruits and veggies. Growing up, however, we come to learn that to keep the joys of aging at bay, a simple fruit doesn’t suffice. We understand that it’s a combination of the lifestyle we live, the relationships we form, along with, yes, the types and qualities of foods we eat.

While studying to receive my bachelors in Health Science at Western New England University (shameless plug) I remember taking numerous classes from organic chemistry to Protein Folding, Misfolding & Disease (we studied mad cow disease, very interesting). In going through all of these classes one comes to the deeper realization that physically our bodies really are a combination of chemicals and molecular structures (what an epiphany).

What does this have to do with coffee?

Great question. In recent times i’ve heard a number of reports from friends and family, coffee lovers and haters alike, each with their own anecdotal report as to why people should or should not be drinking caffeine on the daily. Being the person I am, (never being satisfied with just an opinion) I wanted to find out for myself,

Is coffee good or bad for your health?

In order to really take a deep look into espresso, we need to go smaller. Smaller than an individual coffee bean, and look at the chemical composition of espresso.

I’ll spare you the boring talk, but to put it simply espresso is primarily chemically made up of caffeine (shocker), tannins, proteins, fixed oils
